Most people, quite sadly and with disastrous consequences, do not know that the gift is already given.
Richard Rohr, in The Naked Now

We are given the Divine Presence of God and within that and residing with us is faith, hope and love. Yet, many ignore this gift and some of those who do not know this gift, this experience, are by their words and deeds telling us that they are disordered, that their ideas are ignorant of the gift and in that ignorance they advocate behaviors and policies and world views which are antithetical to faith, hope and love.
You see this in political candidates who advance abortion to the new-born child. Not satisfied with taking the life of a child within the womb, they see killing a newborn as a “choice!”
Think, too, of those who wish that felons may vote while in prison or that all manner of souls have welcome access to this country without regard to their conduct, misbehavior – even when it is unlawful, sinister, or intended to destroy this nation or engage in criminal conduct. Think, too, of the elected and aspiring politicians who seek to create a climate where all is “free” and no one is accountable. Think of those who wish to dismantle free enterprise, the U.S. Constitution or the Electoral College because their side did NOT win a presidential election. And think too of those among us who wish to accommodate all manner of sexual deviancy.
People are known by their words and deeds. Many among us tell you that they do not know of the experience of the God within and that they are hostile to the idea of God and those who espouse this belief. This is both a shame and very dangerous in a world where Christianity and Judaism are under increasing attack while the West stands by and does next to nothing to defend itself. Serious business, Friends.

The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing that I lack …
Psalm 23:1

Do you ever ask yourself how did Jesus endure what he did? In this question I suppose it is wise to realize that his strength came from his intimacy with the Father.
Yes, our strength, peace and contentment comes from our intimacy with God our Father. Yet, think about this: what happens when we drift away from God? When a culture divorces itself from God? When God is no longer welcomed in the public square?
In such circumstances whither strength? Courage? Confidence? Hope? Friendship? Community? Family? Love? Peace? Tranquility? Insight? Truth? Wisdom? Certainty?
Do you wish disintegration? Illness? Confusion? Division? Hostility? Destruction? A nation’s decline? Then deny God … and you will gather all these and much more that is injurious. Be certain of this – Western Civilization itself rests on Christianity, Judaism and the belief in God and our relationship with God. And be certain of this as well: there are within and without those who deny God and aim to destroy those who believe in God and nation’s which reflect that belief.
Perhaps the tragic fire at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris is the impetus we need to realize that we in the West are a people whose very existence rests on belief in God and the faith which embodies that belief. Make no mistake in this one thing we are in a very, very serious struggle.
Shalom.
Difficult subject. I have tweaked this several times in the hopes of not alienating others while trying to focus on restoring some good to our present circumstances.

The psychology of the individual can never be exhaustively explained from himself alone: … clear recognition is needed by the way (one) is also conditioned by historical and environmental circumstances … individual psychology is not merely a physiological, biological, or personal problem: it is also a contemporary problem. Mass murder in Las Vegas.
Disorder does not spring up by itself no more than a flower blossoms without a seed.
The individual person does not (even in the best of times) possess much self-understanding. In our mass communication culture, where God and religious belief is minimized or attacked, disorder is magnified. Today we seem intent on division and antagonism. Political correctness is not a moral structure.
When “isms” proliferate disordered conduct can displace healthy and trusted beliefs. Those in authority can even advance chaos.
An individual’s disorder is conditioned by history, personal environment and culture – all the more when faith is lost and society has gone astray.
Evil seems to flourish when antagonism is more common. We pay a very heavy price for division and godlessness.
It is a time to draw together, to seek what we share in common, to build friendships and foster individual responsibility so each might know prosperity and the contentment of personal achievement.
It takes discretion and determination to avoid disorder today. Only those with considerable self-understanding maintain a healthy distance. Religious narrative and a relationship with God are critical today.
You had best see who you are and what precisely your culture conveys … and most certainly turn away from those who advance disorder. Destruction is the obvious product of disordered people. We need to get well. To listen carefully and choose wisely.
The healthy person today will be more likely he or she who resembles as to modern society and disordered godless mass culture the disposition of a monk in plain clothes.

Being Reported – It is being reported by several news organizations that a senior attorney at CBS expressed an absence of sympathy for those shot in Las Vegas because “country music fans often are Republicans – (and) gun toters.” One can only hope this is not accurately reported. Yet, it is surely the case that political hostility must be reduced by all.
Dedicated to My Son, His Wife and My Two Grandchildren … and All the Parents Raising Children
To be a good parent … we do not need to be people who have arrived; God simply calls us to be on the way, seeking, finding, and rejoicing in what we find. (Emphasis added.)
Catherine Stonehouse, in Joining Children on the Spiritual Journey: Nurturing a Life of Faith.

My son and I recently had a very interesting conversation about providing for the spiritual lives of his two small children, ages almost three and almost one.
Yes, children have – as all human beings do – innate spiritual needs and desires.
Throughout the ages people are confronted with all sorts of probative “why” and “how” and “what” and “who” questions. Why do bad things happen? How can we be good? What is love? How do you forgive someone? Who made the world? Why go to church?
Yes, we are all bound by these questions. And, no – politics does not provide the answer. And, yes – by thinking all things are political as many do in this imploding secular culture we establish one thing for sure: life and cultures demand that individuals pay particular attention to our interior, the spiritual plateau in all human beings or court chaos and destruction, disintegration. Absent attention to the spiritual: cultures, societies, communities, families, nations, individual people are undone – destroyed – trapped in selfishness, error, hostility, destruction, conflict, injury and despair.
Frankly, we are inclined precisely in that destructive dimension in contemporary America and the West at this very moment.
We are, of course, not human beings seeking a spiritual experience, but rather – spiritual beings seeking a human experience.
Look around you. Do you see how costly denying God and spiritual reality can be?
Parents attend to your spiritual existence and invite your children to join you. Individually you will each be better – together you will be a family – a sacred, life-saving vessel in a world of choppy waters and occasional gales.
I wish you smooth seas – no matter the conditions you meet.

Moral Indignation. Been alive for seven-plus decades. Ain’t met a single perfect person, nor an angel. My conclusion: we are not perfect. Yet, now some (armed with moral indignation) are set on tearing down statues of people they find unsavory. With this approach the Democrat Party may find itself banished after their lengthy history of favoring the Klan and racial segregation.
In the language of Boston politics – what goes around, comes around.
