This Thanksgiving and Christmas Season, pledge to seek closeness with God.  Do so with a very simple act: listen privately to Gregorio Allegri’s Miserere.  Make it a frequent act. Use it as your seasonal meditation.  Its Truth will touch your heart and soul.  From it you will ask: How is it that I live as I do, fall so far short of what God has made me to be?

The division of human beings into male and female engenders a perpetual search for one another, since only through the joining of bodies can a paradisal unity occur, bringing with it the sense of security and God’s presence.

Andrzej Franaszek, in Milosz

+ + +

Here Franaszek cites the sentiment of Czeslaw Milosz in his Unattainable Earth.

Think about the Truth of the matter: men and women are made to seek one another so their union in Paradise may once again be known.  Yes, in marriage between a man and a woman we become whole, and God’s presence can be known, felt, ingested and we are fulfilled.

Now think about the gross escapades of Bill Clinton, Ted Kennedy, Harvey Weinstein, Senator Franken, Charlie Rose, Anthony Weiner, and so many others.  The deeds of these people are godless, sick, evil, sacrilegious, unloving, dehumanizing, abnormal, unhealthy, without honor – disgusting and injurious to all.  But think too how they have been cultivated by the “Sexual Revolution” of the late 1960’s and excused by the Progressives, the Left, academics, the media, Hollywood, the entertainment industry, Feminists, Marxists, and those who wish to destroy America and “change” fundamentally who we have been and who God made us to be.

However don’t stop there for there is more fruit from this Poison Tree of this Marxist-inspired sexual liberation.  The fruit?  Abortion – the killing of unborn children, adultery, pornography, child sexual abuse, female predatory teachers, international sex trade, broken marriage, the fallacy of same-sex marriage, AIDS, “no fault” divorce, families without fathers, teenage pregnancy, dead-beat Dads, single mothers, the fiction of “villages raising children,” the growth of dependent women consigned to a life on the government dole, the political division between men and women fostered by the Democrat Left and “identity politics.”

We have in the last 50 years driven God and faith from culture and surely the public square and deconstructed a healthy society by destroying its vital human institutions and placing belief in God, and faith itself under a veil of suspicion.

Do not make the mistake of seeing today’s tawdry episodes as unrelated to a wave of godless Leftist destruction.  No, what we see is the evidence of their years of inter-personal, spiritual and social destruction.

The bill for the Bacchanal has become do.  We know who bears responsibility.  We no longer need to listen to these errant voices anymore.  Their social engineering has failed miserably.

Man and woman: sacred beings.  Their union: a sacred vehicle.  Abandon this and one pays this price: self-destruction – individually, as to family, community, a political system and a Nation.

For sane people – hard facts demand fundamental change – a restoration of dignity, honor, truth and relationship with God.  Step up – reclaim what is your Divine identity and reclaim your life and land.  Happiness and prosperity await.

Shalom.

Socialist Drivel – The next time you hear some professor, politician, college student or professor, or a member of the media or a Hollywood celebrity talk about the benefits of socialism – just remember the “Sexual Revolution” and walk away.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart … do not lean on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge Him … He will make your paths straight.

Prov 3: 5, 6

+ + +

We have strayed dramatically from God.  Our nation has many among its elites who have gone far astray, who trust only in themselves – who have become corrupted.

In this circumstance we see the challenge posed for those who believe in God by those who are godless and hence pursue their selfish interest – power, and personal gain.  Yes, the questions joined now are good vs. evil, God vs. godlessness, belief vs. unbelief, Truth vs. falsehood.

In too many who occupy leadership positions God is rejected.  It is hard to imagine how it is that one can reject God, a God who is Love.

Think about God who is Love.

It is difficult for humans to imagine a God who loves freely, whose very nature is to love us without fail.  Why is this so?  Because we often love selectively – love only those who comply with our views, love only those who seem to love us as our condition of loving them.  But this is not how God loves.

Through we are sinners, God sends His Son to die for us, so we might believe in Him.

While we love on condition, God loves unconditionally.  But mind you this does not give us permission to lie, cheat, steal, be selfish, be a racist, advance sexual dysfunction and declare it normative, kill the unborn, commit adultery and violent crimes, deny reality, etc.

God loves us so that we might have peace, security, joy, contentment, a level of certainty, courage, meaning and purpose, and full growth.

Having been given love – we must love for to not love is to abandon who we are and who God is.

In the God who is love – all are worthy.  And yes, those whose behavior is rank, dishonest, selfish say: “I do not believe in anything but me.”  We have many of these people in our midst – one cannot yield to them, they must be dismissed, rejected for their ability to destroy is obvious and contrary to God and our welfare.

These naysayers now have greater influence over us and this culture than they warrant.  They are in positions of power, in academia and politics, in mass communication, law, education and entertainment – even in religious entities.

Time to restore God’s place in our life, our culture, our nation and our daily discourse.  Each of us bear this responsibility.

Shalom.

Sickness – Last night on Tucker Carlson’s show I saw yet another Law Professor (Ekow Yankah) spouting off as if a law degree itself made him smart, and wise.

Law degrees make one neither smart nor wise.  If you can read you can become a lawyer.  I know I am a lawyer.

Mr. Yankah was not just spouting off, he was advancing Black racism, yes – judging people by their skin color in just the same way feminists judge people by their gender.  Whither knowledge of moral philosophy, religion, theology, history, humility, good taste and grace?

We have a real problem of granting to lawyers, judges, academics, the media, politicians and (God help us) celebrities and entrepreneurial technologists knowledge and wisdom that they do not possess.  Granting those like Mr. Yankah any public forum is precisely what we ought not to do.  We have ignorance enough – no sense adding more and the division these thinly educated, misguided individuals now bring to us.

The proverbs of Solomon … To know wisdom … receive instruction in wise behavior, righteousness, justice and equity … fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Prov 1: 1, 2, 3, 7

+ + +

We seem to concede a great deal of our living to others, to the structures that surround us.  Perhaps, it is the desire for “easy” living – a “just-add-water” kind of intellectual and personal shortcut.  A shortcut that assumes carelessly, and without thought or examination, that “those in authority” know what they are doing and they act in our best interest.

Living by fantasy or myth?  So it seems.  Indeed, facts appear to incline to the exact opposite proposition than that “those in authority” know best.

In re-reading British Historian Paul Johnson’s 800 page book Modern Times: The World from the Twenties to the Nineties I am reminded how Johnson reports that the Germany of World War II was prepared by the unexamined actions of state leaders in the late 1800’s and the early years of the twentieth century.  That is to say: government made choices that unwittingly readied their people for a collision course that became the Second World War.

In particular Johnson points out that the ranks of the industrial workers expanded between the late 1800’s and early 1900’s as German industry grew and that the elites and military class resisted sharing power with them so an extensive welfare state was established to placate the population, and that Bismarck manufactured “imaginary foreign threats” that created a unified, subdued German populace – and unwittingly prepared Germany for war.  Yes, Johnson reminds the reader that these fears worked their way into subsequent politicians and leaders who fostered German aggression.

What is my point?  Proverbs were designed to make each person wiser, to cultivate knowledge and good conduct, independent thinking – greater understanding and insight.

The German state Johnson describes was governed in precisely an opposite manner.  It was meant to deceive and reserve all control in the hands of the ruling elites.

Are we not in a very similar situation today?

The Democrat Party of the Left is rigging its primaries, colluding with the Russians to secure outlandish allegations against a political opponent.  While in power they are making insider-deals with Russian oligarchs to provide them access to American uranium while identifying a goodly number of Americans as “a basket of deplorables” and furthering the nuclear development of an Iran that seeks “death to America.”  Mind you, the comfortable Republican elites are more than willing to go-along-to-get-along.

Frankly, it is the above circumstances which explains the last Presidential election result.  Unlike pre-War Germany some in our population know that something is seriously amiss.

Maybe a focus on Proverbs might be in order.  Maybe we have an affirmative duty to acquire the wisdom of Solomon.  Think about it.

Shalom.

Screamers –  When I grew up “screamers” were losers.  This was once again re-inforced when yesterday a handful of Lefties “screamed” in unison because Hillary is not president (nor sane, apparently).  These people can vote.  How sweet.

Begin the morning in the dark and quiet again – but there is a glimpse of sunrise to come where the clouds have parted.  In the background the chants of the Monks from the Monastery of St. Ottilien.  Peace is in the air … beautiful, eternal, above all mortal being.

” … at last bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh.”

Gen 2:23

+ + +

We have lost our way and make grave errors that antagonize and divide, make us enemies in the most fundamental areas of our life – in the most sacred areas – places from which our happiness, joy, and contentment – meaning and purpose are meant flow.

Perhaps no area of error and divergence is any greater than that of  understanding man and woman – understanding their sacred identity and divine value.

God willed the creation of man and woman.  They share perfect equality, one to the other.  Each possess inalienable dignity as they are made to be.  Efforts of any kind to subvert this are reckless, utterly destructive, contrary to nature, God’s will and doomed to fail.

Men treat women as your equal, revere them, protect them, defend them.  Women, see your extraordinary dignity, your special gifts, your most cherished honor to bear a child and love so deeply.

In creating man and woman as helpmates to one another, we see God’s wisdom and goodness.  Together in Holy Matrimony we see God’s image – – – God as pure spirit, pure and steadfast love, and union with us.

Men and women: marry and honor your pledge of union.  No absent fathers.  No single mothers.  No out-of-wedlock births.  No more abortions.  No more rebellion against God.

Men and women are made for one another – as a communion of persons in the intimate manner in which God is unified with the human person.  Two as one – complimentary to one another.  One flesh, “bone of my bone.”

As one we are entrusted with creating new life – sharing in God’s work of divine Creation.  In this we have personal responsibility for the world around us: how it will be, what it will do  – whether it is dominated by Good or Evil, Truth or Lie, Life or Death.

Does not our faith and heritage give question to “same sex marriage,” to “multiple genders” and a self-claim to gender?

Shalom.

Prayer for the Dying

All-powerful and merciful Father, in the death of Christ you have opened a gateway to eternal life.  Look kindly upon Margaret McCurdy who is suffering her last agony.  United to the passion and death of your Son, and saved by the blood He shed, may she come before You with confidence.  Through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Your prayers for Margaret McCurdy are welcome.

Jung felt that the pursuit of wholeness was essential for redressing the split between the conscious and the unconscious.  Although the differentiation … is a natural part of psychiatric development, a total break between the two realms can cause psychic problems.

Curtis D. Smith, Ph.D., in Jung’s Quest for Wholeness

+ + +

Dr. Smith, a Jungian psychologist whose focus is human development and the history of religion, goes on to quote Carl Jung, M.D., who said the “more powerful and independent consciousness becomes, and with it conscious will” the less well and whole we are. In this state, psychic problems follow.

Why do I bring this up?

Well it is quite simple.  I hear from people quite often that they see and encounter people whose actions seem disordered, selfish, troubled, and without concern for others, irrational.  Indeed, Jung is talking about this very issue – about people who are “unconscious” – cut off from their whole being.

Dr. Jung is talking about human wholeness – the unification of the whole human person – the person’s full human development (intellectual, social, emotional, interpersonal, spiritual, etc.) as the object of our creation and existence; and I am concerned that culture can either advance or impede this development.  Further (having studied the relationship between faith and exclusionary secular culture) I see that we produce an abundance of unhealthy, even disintegrated individuals, and that unnecessary chaos, conflict, suffering, division and isolation abound.  May I reference Harvey Weinstein and the legions of married female teachers engaged in sexual conduct with their underage students as “a for instance.”

Consistent with Jung, when man becomes the exclusive focus of man the individual self becomes all important and man’s reason is cultivated at the cost of the unconscious aspects of his being.  Said another way, when man is focused exclusively on man his psyche (soul) is forgotten and problems manifest.

Yes, in our secularized culture we have become one-dimensional, trapped in self and materiality but devoid of a metaphysical intelligence (and spiritual maturity) and hence fall short of the capacity for a full range of experience and human development.  Frankly, we are not well.  We are fragmented at best – lack the capacity for introspection, self-examination, intimacy, and the ability to receive others.  To the contrary, we objectify others and cannot fully comprehend the bizarre actions (even tragedies) that surround us.

Case in point: we are mystified by the actions of Las Vegas mass murderer Stephen Paddock.  His autopsy shows no brain damage to explain his rampage and the authorities can find no particular motive, personal social footprint or provocation for his actions.

Unable to see as other than diminished secularists, they ignore the Unibomber in explaining Mr. Paddock.  They do not recall the Unibomber’s rage arouse from his parents who demanded he forsake other people and things, from childhood on, in favor of constant study.  His parents made him a slave of his intellect.

Yes, in a single fit of rage as a teenager he screamed this to them: “You never let me have a friend!”

It is hard to imagine a more chilling indictment of one’s parents nor a more dreadful, socially starved existence.  He, like Paddock, was a greatly diminished person, one far from wholeness – asocial, isolated, alone.

The neglect of our God-given fullness is the cause of the serious disorder among the godless from top to bottom of the social strata.  We are devoted to self and self alone – and far less well for it.

If we continue in this way, our suffering and murderous chaos, abhorrent interpersonal behavior, group violence, corruption and cover-up, and our isolation one from another will continue us on a destructive, evil path.

When God is neglected, the soul cannot be well.  We prove this daily.

Shalom.

I saw that carrying out a vocation differed from … actions dictated by reason or inclination in that it was due to an impulse … essentially and manifestly different order; and not to follow such an impulse when it made itself felt, even if it demanded impossibilities, seemed to be the greatest of all ills.  (Emphasis added.)

Simone Weil, in a Letter to a Friend

+ + +

Vocations arise from distinctly personal impulse.  One has the interior impetus to dedicate oneself to God and God’s service in an exclusive way.

Impulses like this cannot be easily ignored. To live in relationship with God is to be aligned to the impulse to serve God when needed.  Vocations come to those who are open to receive the call to vocations – to God’s service.

Those who close themselves from these impulses by saying – I will not be involved, I will simply be quiet and let God do the work – have no vocation, cannot be called to vocation because their pre-conceived disposition prevents the openness that impulse requires.

To deny the impulse to serve God actively – in word and deed – forfeits discipleship.  It leaves one to remain safely on the sidelines – even when Rome is burning.

Disciples speak and act.  Other are sideliners.

Are you a sideliner?  Or are you one who is open to the call of God and prepared to do what God asks of you?

Shalom.

Simone Weil was a French Jewish girl with a devotion to Christ.  She was born in 1909 and died in 1943.  My wife Sylvia was taken by Simone Weil and her remarkable life in search of God.  The next few blogs I offer on Simone Weil are for you and for Sylvia whose birthday was this month.

# # #

I always believed that the instant of death is the center and object of life.  I used to think that, for those who live as they should, it is the instant when, for an infinitesimal fraction of time, pure truth, naked, certain, and eternal, enters the soul …  I never desired any other good for myself.  I thought that a life leading to this good is not only defined by a code of morals common to all, but that for each one it consists of a succession of acts and events strictly personal to him, and so essential that he who leaves them on one side never reaches the goal(Emphasis added.)

Simone Weil, in a Letter to a Friend

+ + +

Such a cogent proposition laid upon our table.

The object of life is the exact moment of our passing for that is the moment in which we might know Truth in our soul.

One lives for that moment by living a moral code “common to all,” and by our particular acts and our accepting the events that come to us (each uniquely personal to us) with the clear proviso if we deny the events and avoid the acts we are called to do in our mortal life we will fail to know that sublime moment when Truth is imparted to our soul in an eternal life.

Well there you have it.  Do you live the life you are given?  Do you avoid the actions required of you by the events that are brought to you?  Are you living for you, or are you living the life God has made for you?  Do you live and act in the context of a common moral code?

So we ask: Are you moral?  Do you long for Truth and eternal life?  Do you accept what God gives you and act accordingly?

Shalom.

Modern society has … ‘lost its plot.’  Slavishly following its false gods and idols makes no sense in a spiritually awake life.

Anthon Maarten

+ + +

Mr. Maarten, a self-identified psychic, has something here – particularly if you recognize that much of our discourse is influenced by, and in a sense governed by, the mass media culture and (as to private exchange) often conveyed by impersonal means of technological communication and through “social media” (or anti-personal media – if you prefer accuracy).

One can imagine what comparative mythologist Joseph Campbell might say about this.

Most likely he would identify the vast difference between discourse today and the deeply personal and supernatural discourse of primitive tribal peoples and any number of large cultures over the ages whose essence was of religious narrative and the communal and personal experience of religious existence – of the spiritual life of the human being.

Yes, they had full existence while we have advertising and quarter-baked (at best) political ideology and the heavy hand of government, academia, media and technology in the hands of vested elites.

Look around you at television and the characters who occupy news discourse. Have you ever heard a stranger group offering the most fanciful and bizarre observations and proclamations all without a shred of expertise – wandering into psychology, history, political philosophy and what-have-you armed with but makeup, ideology, bias and a common Leftist script?  Horsefeathers!  If only they were required to wear red bulbous noses and big rubber feet … providing fair warning is only fair.

And then there is the Hollywood sequestered loony-bin.  No shortage of derailed cabooses there.  And now print “media” – filling in the cracks of nonsense spun in political realms. And politics itself – endless strange utterances, inexcusable inertia, oddball explanations and vast projects which embed madness in public institutions and those who drink from their waters.

… lost plot, indeed …

Beware.  The mass cultural voice you miss may be your salvation.  Earplugs do nicely today.

Me?  I opt for Bach solo cello pieces in place of the voices and their image.  But then, I have a spiritual life to live.

Shalom.

“If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up?  And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire for you, but you must master it.”

Gen 4:7

+ + +

These are the words of God to Cain.  They are worthy of our reflection.

Life has its ups and downs.  Yes, even its injustices.  We will be deceived and betrayed by some and circumstances will conspire against us from time to time. Anger is a normal byproduct of deceit and betrayal.  And of disappointment, too.

But know this: anger is the gateway to sin, and evil is often its destination.

In times of disappointment, deceit and betrayal it is best to seek quiet and settle your soul.  Best in these times to be alone with God.  Wise to ask when anger is stirred within us: shall I be as Cain, or shall I be the Lord’s?

It is human to sin.  We are imperfect beings.  But the best way is always to be the Lord’s in all things and all circumstances.

My recommendation? Start each day in Scripture.  Wisdom and strength reside there. The words tend the soul and calm the turbulent seas we all encounter.

In challenging times God’s words settle us and give us peace.  In hard times all is arid and barren, but the words of God are living water – our sustenance and source of our survival.  Life is in the soul, not the body.  Feed the soul each day and calm follows.

Shalom.

In times of public turmoil is it not best to quiet the soul and seek the leadership of those who have done just that – quieted their soul in reliance on God?  Leaders must retain calm to be worthy of our support.  Only those who rest on faith can offer that calm.

We often expect far more from politics and government than is justified … and far less of ourselves and those who would lead us.  Our God desires that each of us grow in Him. There are no substitutes for God if we desire to live well in mortal life with all its challenges.  God bless you all.

Trump Short Term Debt Ceiling Agreement with the Democrats – Smart move. Why? Trump has not been helped by the Congressional Republicans who are captive to the Washington-ways.  Like the Democrats they dislike that Donald Trump is an “outsider.” They now recognize that he is an independent force whose constituency is the American people who are sick of the inertia in Washington and policies that are destructive.  Yes, he represents the “basket of deplorables” – and they are not fans of Washington-ways. Frankly, this shows you that Trump (like military officers) are not wedded to politics and surely not Washington’s ways. Wake up: Mr. Ryan.  Wake up: Mr. McCornell.

The claim of equality … is made only by those who feel themselves to be in some way inferior … he suspects … mere difference of being a claim to superiority.

C. S. Lewis, in The Screwtape Letters

+ + +

We talk a great deal about “equality” – but like most things common to mass secularized culture – it is often invoked but rarely examined.  The presumption that we understand its meaning is simply accepted.  The likelihood that it may do damage is not contemplated nor examined.

The above are the words of Satan (Screwtape) as spoken to his nephew.

As Satan describes in this discourse – he places a lie at the center of human existence so that each may be divided from another and a perpetual division and conflict may ensue. Yes, the idea of equality was for Old Screwtape a device intended to create discord.

In present day American it seems that he has succeeded.

Think about the endless claims for equality that are raised by those with all sorts of injuries, disadvantages, personal fetishes and preferences.  All who match under the “equality” banner … divide the population and put community and family at odds.

Think about it, if one is treated adversely would not one who believed in what God created in him or her – not proceed to prove their worth?  Now people are too willing to accept their “inferiority” and in contrast impede their ability to excel, achieve.

Had I, a fatherless child, living in poverty believed that I would have been immobilized.

In contrast, I never assumed my inferiority nor thought I could not manage to succeed. In consequence (with but modest skills) I pursued goals, gained experience, kept an open heart and a healthy disposition and moved down the line handicaps and all.

Equality.  Think about it.  Have you noticed that those who counsel this thinking always seem to spare themselves from the greater mass – choosing to live far more privileged lives than the ones they deem to suffer from inequality?

Yes, such things speak to gimmick not sacred cause.  Screwtape smiles.

Shalom.

Funny.  Wouldn’t it be funny if old Bean Pole Mueller succeeded in driving Donald Trump from office only to have Trump run in 2020 and win the presidency again.

Having grown up with Boston’s Winter Hill Gang, I’ve seen revenge – a meal so delicious when served cold.  Those boys didn’t get you with the corrupted organs of the state, they were more direct.

One guy throws rocks from behind a curtain and another looks right at you and whacks you.  I detect a substantive difference.  I suspect crime novelist George V. Higgins would too.  Gimme the old days and the old ways.  We accounted for Screwtape then.  Not so much now.

Keep your head up and your eyes on God.
