Wars have their prelude, their component miscues and misadventures, their self-delusions and grand deceits.

One thinks of this now as many troubling signs emerge.

Russia is in Syria propping up a brutal regime, Iran pursues both nuclear weapons and expansion while supporting insurgents in foreign lands, North Korea strives for a nuclear arsenal and European countries seed authority to stateless Brussels bureaucrats while terrorists roam their homeland largely unabated.

In the United States, we enlarge the national debt, fatten the dependent population and the expand the expectations of citizens for more and more national benefits.

Some European nations are beginning to resume required national military service, yet attention turns to “global warming” as if nothing is more important. Fantasies absorb us.

In our once mature and sane representative democracy, college students require pampering and “protection” from free speech while some assault civility and those with whom they disagree.  On campus, hate is protected by cowardly administrators.

In the public square God is unwelcome while obesity looms and one wonders where the next “Greatest Generation” has gone.

As Churchill rightly notices, the antics of the Liberals pave a nasty road to a tragic destination.

Hard to dispute this today.  Indeed, we have lost touch with truth, and consequently, with reality.  But neither truth nor reality have lost touch with us.

At the foundation of moral thinking lie beliefs in statements the truth of which no further reason can be given.

You have been offered access to the path.  This nation once was filled with those who knew this and sought that path – took it.  They made this Nation great among all other nations.

But now we ask what has happened?  Why the destruction?  Why the harvest of bad fruit?  Do you see the false prophets who plant the bad trees and harvest the bad fruit?

Do you do the will of The Father?  Or are you the lawless ones who live in silence when you should speak Truth?

We stand at a turning point.  Faith or destruction?  Where are you?  Do you have the courage to stand in faith?  To stand with Christ?  To do the will of The Father?

Realize your silence can bring death to many.  Is this who you have become? Who you now are?  I pray not.

Surveillance – The pundits and “talking heads” tell us that there is a “paper trail” of judicial warrants and FISA Court orders that coincide with government surveillance of Mr. Trump and his Republican associates.  I suspect this grants to those who collected information on Mr. Trump and his associates far more respect for law and the 4th Amendment than ought to be properly ascribed to politically charged snoops.  As we like to say in my old neighborhood: there is no honor among thieves – they are just as dishonorable as the rest of us.

Further – it is now reported that the materials reviewed by the House Intelligence Committee Chairman show the names of four individuals on the Obama White House staff who reviewed the classified surveillance.  This matter is all going to get far worse for those people and the former Democrat administration.  Serious breaches of law and national security create a real mess.  Such is the “bad fruit” of political hackery, Leftist hatred, incompetence, partisanship, disdain for law, the Constitution, God and this Great Nation.  We now know all we need to know about the American Left … and their water carriers in the press and media.  At this point, the Left, the Democrats, the press and media kiddies seem best at discrediting themselves.

In standing between good and evil the human person is more than animal.  He possesses more – that more is conscience.  He and she must choose what is good, not what is evil.

Our choices, you see, either bring us closer to God, or separate was further and further from God.  It is in the first that full life is known and experienced, and in the second that death comes to us before our mortal end – a death that extends into eternity.

We die as we live.  Conscience is always in play.

Funny how this proposition is lost to us today.  We no longer imagine the dynamic of an existence between good and evil and the role this plays for us in active choice, decision-making, and the vital place for conscience in our daily existence.

Case in point, the nitwit Democrat Liberals (and their bed mates in the teachers’ union) who run affluent Montgomery County, Maryland, welcomed an 18 year old illegal immigrant and another 17 year old friend into the school system placing them with 14 year old students in the 9th grade.  (The school system, predicatively, prides itself in ignoring an immigrant’s legal status.)  Well, these two non-English speaking geniuses were arrested this week for pushing a ninth grade girl into a boy’s bathroom in a local high school and sexually assaulting and raping her.  The authorities, of course, never vetted these young men – had no idea who or what they were.

No sense of responsibility for good and evil equals no conscience, and evil emerges.

In the above case, the Country school administrators, the teachers’ union, Country Liberal Democrat pols and those who support them ought to be held equally accountable for their part in this heinous assault.  Choosing evil has its price … or surely must have its price in a good and faithful society.  And that price ought to be the exile of the fools who prepare the way for evil, yes, an immediate exile for those who are a threat to public safety.  Send them far East of Eden, never to be seen again.

Let’s face it, in our secular age, we seem to think and act as if one’s mortal end is the end of our existence, that all in mortal life is all that is, and all that matters.

With such an ignorant mindset, the onus (it follows) is for us to live as fully as we fancy in the here and now – conscience aside.  Hence, we proceed to ignore reality, consume all that we can, acquire all we can, glorify ourselves, fuel our life experience with drugs, sex, alcohol, greed, power, status, celebrity (however fleeting) and the false idea that we are “masters” of all and wiser and more sure-footed than others.  Baloney.

Does one wonder why so many pursue selfish interests to the absolute exclusion of common sense and others – even family?  Or why divorce is so common? Likewise that children are abandoned?  Mental illness and obesity flourish? Suicide, too? Gang violence? Adultery? Pornography, as well?

In a culture without conscience, do not the executioners prevail in number while the innocent are, like the girl who was raped, offered up by those who choose evil and its furtherance?   Have we not had more than enough of the agents of evil: the Liberal Democrat and the “progressives” (Marxists) that gather with them?

Tree of good and evil, Friends.  Let’s get real.

As you know this blog seeks to explore the place of faith in contemporary secular culture. In doing so, I look out the window of my small cottage onto the world and I often comment on the antics and misdeeds of modern culture and the people who populate it.

Yes, this makes for harsh language, for the actions of the modern secular person and their organizations are far, far from the image of God.

Since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that abortions are legal and constitutionally protected, nearly 60 million unborn children have been killed.  Hardly seems like the majority of the Court in Roe v. Wade could have acted as if they were made in God’s image.  Ditto – abortion advocates – especially feminists for whom the life of a child gives way to their own desires. Made in God’s image?  If judged by their actions, No.

So how does one explain this departure from the essence of God’s creation of man and woman?

The answer is in the tree.  The tree?  Yes, the tree.

The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.” (Gen 2:16-17)

Yes, many among us have elected what can be fairly judged as evil and made a place for their views in this land.  Yes, judges, and those who would be mothers, and politicians and multiple self-serving advocates would seem to have furthered evil, institutionalized it..  That is America today.  That is the product of godless secularism, the Democrat Left, of the Marxists parading at “progressives.”

This is the view from my cottage window, and why I write as I do … and why I so often close the shutters of my window – so I might live free of evil, and its carnage, and absurdity and its lies, its anger and hostility, and its advocates in robes and in plain clothes.

Finally, make no mistake – to be made in God’s image requires we choose good – not evil. To do otherwise is to take the gift of our life and deny God.

Further, such evil as we pursue, multiplies evil.  Today, we see it in the destruction of marriage, the attacks on this Nation and its borders, the distorted appetites of fallen people marshalled into protected legal status – as if these appetites are want of a God who seeks that we choose what is good and pure.

Our task?  Return to God, or live with the shutters closed.

Rigidity.  Corpses are rigid.  The Living are not.

The Leftist protesters are rigid.  “People of change” are, in truth, reactionaries.

They, like the Leftist students in Paris, want lifetime predictability, government jobs, with long vacations and early retirement.  Absent that, they want handouts and no responsibilities whatsoever.

Do you see the sweet irony that they do not fathom?

Their words convey their opposite meaning.  They are absurd characters in their own absurdist play.  True to form, they are unaware of their foolish incongruity. They are narcissists without a mirror.

Make no mistake, those in the streets are the walking dead – their animation cannot mask the rigor mortis in them.  They of the “save spaces” fear life and living.

They are weak, static, soft.  They are the stiffness of death.  They seek life as in the time-stopped Cuba – a land of slogan, not prosperity nor freedom.  They fancy the antique Lenin and Stalin as do the public “sympths” in the media, press and among the circus denizens of the “entertainment industry.”

Americans live free.  Are independent.  Have courage.  Confidence.  Faith.  We do not settle for handouts, Big Brother or the Nanny State.  We do not worry and weep, sleep with the light on, hasten to control others, distort human nature, divide and antagonize.

We work hard and we live what life brings us.   We are realists and practical.

We know that life has risk.  We know that this brings out the best in us.  We know our soul. We dare to live striving for what is good, knowing we are imperfect and that God governs.

We know storms and injustice and, seek excellence when we are at our best.

We are the antithesis of the frightened and confused reactionaries in the street.

Barth said this in 1946.  It is actually far worse here in the U.S. today.  Worse?

Yes, departments of government have been corrupted, one political Party in particular stands for what is false, untrue, “dirty tricks,” slander, collusion and the like.  And the media and press seem to have fallen in line.  Law itself is lawless, and justice is denied.

Yes, we have a crisis – a crisis of national character which, in its natural course – if unchecked and uncorrected – will destroy us as sure as the Roman Empire was destroyed.

In the midst of this I am struck by the silence and the absence of good men and women standing up, calling out the corrupt ones, demanding their resignation and their prosecution.

Where are the Church leaders on this?  The Bar Associations?  The retired judges – free to voice their objection, anger and outrage?  The University presidents? Esteemed public servants?  The so-called Union leaders?  The President?  Vice-President?  The privileged families of this land?  The Bushes?  The Kennedys?  The wise historians who have been honored by our esteem?  Where are these privileged people of plenty?

And where is our local clergy?

Where are our civic associations and national organizations?  The AMA?  The ABA? The U.S. Chamber of Commerce?  The weekly and monthly national periodicals? Where?

Where are our industrial leaders?  Corporate heads?  Those who run our Catholic universities, or faith-based colleges? Where?  Where are these people?

The bankers and financiers?  Where are the Tom Cooks?  The Bill Gates?  The Warren Buffets? So many of them are all talk when there is no crisis – but remain “missing in action” when the rubber hits the road and there is fight to be had and leadership required.

Silence now is assent – betrayal, cowardice.

Yes, Catholic life offers no “passes,” provides no excuse to remain silent when the truth is attacked, evil is spread and man, woman, child and family are diminished by the institutionalization of corruption and godlessness, or by the craven acts and lies of those governed by selfishness, and a lust for wealth, power and control.

These words are no less true today in this political climate than they were in 1939.

Catholics do not “take a day off.”  They do not “have a time-out.”  Being a Catholic is an all-time, all-day, all-encompassing, forever reality.  There are no convenient vacations, no compromises as to what we believe and have been given as a gift.  This is our tradition. This is how we live.  This is who we are. This is our way of life.  This is how The Body of Christ prevails over the centuries. Yes, Christ lives in us and what we do.

Alas, we now see those among us who think that they are “above the fray,” that they can sit about when the Church, its believers, and Christ are attacked, belittled, condemned, exiled, dismissed, subverted.

Yes, we have among us “in the bark of Peter” those who ignore the fight that has been brought to them.  They do so (as they explain) to remain “pure.”  They might do well to remember the words of Jacques Maritain when he wrote of purity …

“Of this word itself an impure use has been made. It has become an equivocal word, dragged about everywhere.”

Friends, there is no free passage in the bark of Peter.

It is time to be counted.  Fear not.  Stand tall.  No excuses.

An American citizen is endowed by God with unalienable rights.  Yes, these rights are given by God, not by man or government, and given by God they cannot be taken away by man or government.

But does government, especially the Executive Branch, Supreme Court and the judiciary honor this invaluable and fundamental truth?

I suppose if one thinks of legalized abortion, one would have to say that the unborn child’s unalienable rights are not honored and protected.  Likewise, when a Court “redefines” marriage or polices and even expels God and prayer from the public square or the classroom, the unalienable rights of Believers are not protected.  So too, when military chaplains are silenced – those Believers who protect us are deprived of their unalienable rights.

We have departed radically from Our Founders vision and intent.  We have divorced ourselves from God; and, government now assumes the role of Our Omnipotent.

We are now governed by a few men and women and their fickle, uninformed and godless bias.  We are now beholding to their prejudice, ignorance, ideas, hostilities and preferences as if they are God.  Yet, man cannot govern himself or herself without God for man cannot know his full measure, the depth of his psyche or soul.  He is most often a mystery to himself and one who dares not examine his depths – a person without full knowledge even of himself.

Today I saw a video tape of two middle-aged people (a husband and a wife) sprawled out on a public street in broad daylight.  They were heroin addicts who collapsed and a small crowd of onlookers hovered near them, chatting and laughing about this man and this woman.  No one came to their assistance.  They simply “enjoyed” the spectacle.

When a government exiles God and proceeds to be “master of all” people and things – People and a nation lose their way, lose their humanity, lose their bond with one another. This is where we are now – and we can thank the godless in governing positions, for this.

Is it not the case that Believers and church leaders have been silent too long, passive too long, collaborators too long?

When rights are not protected they are seized by the prideful who seek to bend others to their image and whim.  Disaster follows and nations fall to ruin.

I watched 13 Hours last night.  It is about the attack on America’s outpost in Benghazi, Libya and the killing of the our Ambassador and the exceptionally brave men who, while badly out-numbered, fought courageously to protect him and others at our facility.

And poignantly 13 Hours is about Our Secretary of State Hillary Clinton who did nothing to protect the people there, or respond to pleas from them while they were enduring an attack that lasted hours upon hours.

Our people in Benghazi were betrayed, their families, too – just as we were by the cowardly failure of those in Washington who did nothing while brave men died.

Fowles was right.  Hitler was simply playing out his hateful, murderous pathology. In this he did not betray himself – yet, those who supported him and the silent millions did.

Ms. Clinton does the same.  We know she is disordered, a lair.  This truth goes back decades.  Yet, unashamed – she stands for election and people, presumably much like her, join her and support her.  What does that say about the Democrat Party?  The Left?  The press and media?  Others?  Us? 

Many American women will vote for her simply because they have a vagina and it is rumored that she does too.

Elections are snapshots of who we are at any given time.  If this is who we are, we are a sad and lost lot.

Anyone who intends to vote ought to have to see 13 Hours.  Maybe that will stir their conscience, enliven their soul.

To those who will vote for her all the same, I suppose it would be fitting for them to offer themselves, their children, loved ones so that the next time we are attacked they, or those who they love, can experience what it is like when they call for help and no one answers.
