… “political correctness” is one of the most dangerous intellectual afflictions ever to attack mankind … PC has enormous appeal to the semi-educated … But it also appeals to pseudo-intellectuals …

Paul Johnson, in Forbes (April 19, 2016)

+ + +

Noted British historian Paul Johnson takes out after “political correctness” in a way that I have not seen anyone do here in the U.S.  It seems, unlike Johnson, our public voices are fearful that some claimants to PC nonsense might take an exception. So much for the state of courage, intellect and common sense here and now.

Johnson reminds us that “any empty-headed student” can “claim some hurt” and the “dons and professors” will “wave the white feather” and extinguish free speech and public debate.  So much for the “leadership” and courage of trembling elders occupying university administrations.

Of course PC doesn’t stop at the campus edge, but rather gets repeated and applied to the populace by ready bureaucrats, regulators, school boards and legislators.

Johnson smartly sees that Donald Trump’s “vulgar, abusive, nasty, rude, boorish, and outrageous” presentation is precisely what is needed to confront PC.  As Johnson notes: America has had a long history of “vigorous, outspoken, raw and raucous” political speech and PC thinking does squelch that freedom to our great detriment.

Yes, Johnson sees Trump as a sharp contrast to the spineless and pusillanimous American political figures of the last decade (and, by implication, in the West with nations conceding their freedom to super-legislative, international bodies of PC focused and inept softies).

And herein is Johnson’s most critical observation – in Brexit and the Trump election we are seeing an expression of individual freedom and a rejection of the Nanny State, its PC idiocy and special pleading proponents whose only interest is tilting public life and benefit to them … and the devil with individual freedom … For them “equality” and “tolerance” are but PC clubs to beat the life out of liberty.  Think about it, is it any wonder that religion is the enemy of the PC crowd? Or why they hold this nation worthless?

I have said to many who object to Mr. Trump this: if you only look at Trump you are missing the movie … the larger story is about individual freedom and the authority of the nation state that is constrained by a free people and an astute Constitution in a federalist representative government of autonomous states.

Living faith in culture requires attention to the nature of culture and its expression in politics.  PC places freedom beyond reach and pulls totalitarian impulses to the fore.

Shalom.

News – It seems that Senator Bernie Sanders and his wife Jane have hired legal representation because of an investigation into Mrs. Sanders securing a large bank loan for the college of which she was President shortly before it closed its doors and may have failed to accurately report the college’s financial state in the loan application.  Socialism Venezuela style?

… the Light has come into the world, and men have chosen darkness rather than Light, for their deeds were evil.  For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.  But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought by God. (Emphasis added.)

Jn 3: 19, 20, 21

+ + +

I have been focusing on the Gospel of John and the teachings that Jesus brings us in it.  I do so for a particular reason and it is this: we in the United States, especially among elites – those of privilege … including the media and entertainment class, lawyers and the judiciary, and university teachers and administrators, have lost contact with God, or have rejected God, religious narrative and Christ and this underlies all of our problems and our deteriorating public discourse and the reduced quality of those serving in public life.

Spirlaw is a blog about faith and culture.  About the intersection between faith and the culture in which we live.  There is no moral guide without faith and religious narrative.

The loss of recognition of faith’s invaluable importance to a healthy culture is crippling, destabilizing.  In its absence all sorts of ideas and wants are pushed forward without a glimmer of depth or understanding.  The subsequent foolishness is and can be both costly and utterly destructive.  We seem to have adequately demonstrated this quite clearly in the last five to six decades.

We are unhealthy, divided, crude and increasingly ignorant and wasteful.

Things have got to change.  We must return to the source of our wisdom and humanity – to faith – knowledge of it and life lived in it.

Look at the above words.  Read them.  Pause to think about them.

Do you see evil in this culture?  Among the most vocal advocates?  Or do you see good? Light?  Is faith banished or welcome?  Is God dismissed or welcome? Is Light manifest?

Or does one hear actors and celebrities, elected officials even – talking hatefully and doing so without hesitation?  Is the media truthful or are they not?

Those who are not truthful are not of the Light.  They destroy and there is no reason to give them ear.

Shalom.

Common Mistake – I recently watched an interesting report on the BBC about suicide among homosexuals.  The claim was made that it is a serious problem and that its cause is the denial of equality.

The common mistake?  Not all matters and forms of human behavior depend on “equality.”

There is far more to a healthy life than “equality.”  It is not the essence of human existence.

Indeed “equality” is invoked by political advocates without any evidence that they have studied the concept.  They use “equality” in an undifferentiated way.   Big mistake.  A mistake of ignorance.

The result in this case is this: neither “equality” nor suicide are understood.

Our ignorance grows seemingly in direct proportion to the growth of educational institutions and budget increases in education.

On the altar in my hermitage in France are images of Buddha and Jesus, and every time I light incense, I touch both of them as my spiritual ancestors … When you touch someone who authentically represents a tradition, you not only touch his or her tradition, you also touch your own. This quality is essential to dialogue.

Thich Nhat Hanh, in Living Buddha, Living Christ

+ + +

Tradition is profoundly important.  It is, as Thich says, essential to dialogue. Without tradition one cannot easily acquire the experience of another for traditions convey human experience, reality discovered over centuries, truth as to human beings and the supernatural.

In America, today, we have little constructive or civic dialogue between the Left and the rest of us.  Rather, we hear very harsh, hostile and angry language from the Left.  Their word and conduct decry this fact: those at war with others are at war with themselves.

War, you say.  Yes.

The Left feels betrayed.  They lost power and an election that felt sure they would win … one they and their candidate felt entitled to win.

Indeed, they feel rejected and cannot come to understand as they must, in these circumstances, that they must look within to ask: why is this so?  Why did so many others not favor them?

Yes, they have been betrayed.  But not by those who voted for their opponent – but rather by their ideology – an ideology which attacks tradition and faith that is its common witness.  In short, the Left has attacked and opposed tradition and religion.

As to ideology, it has no long human history.  It is a recent human construct, a fiction of intellect – not a vehicle of human and divine truth.  It is simply: a lie … and to live a lie is a personal betrayal, self-deception from which no authentic dialogue can arise.

In the West, the modern liberals and the Left have chosen intellect over faith, power over humility, what is false on its face from what is and has been sustained truth about humans and eternity.

If we are to have a civil society, the Left will have to see their errors and change their ways rather dramatically.  On our part, we must be present in kindness and calm to receive them when they desire to advance civil community once again.

Shalom.

Tradition does not mean that the living are dead, it means that the dead are living.

G.K. Chesterton

+ + +

Ah, but the absence of tradition does mean that the living are dead.  Just look around.  If only modern liberalism could understand this.  But alas, this is but one of their most egregious mistakes and one of the most costly as well.

Be clear about this: when tradition is shunned, or destroyed – chaos ensues, division and hostility too.  Indeed, the modern liberal will do anything to expunge tradition from a culture.  How else might a minority seize control over the many?

Think about it.  Why is tradition a target?  And what takes its place?

Shalom.

This is the day of Lord hath made, let us rejoice and be glad.

There have ever been and will ever be men who … will seek to exempt … parts of their faith from (authority) … to keep their minds floating between liberty and obedience.

Alexander de Tocqueville, in Democracy in America (Volume II)

+ + +

In Texas a 19-year-old women with two adorable little girls –  ages one and two – and no husband drove to a house with a 16-year-old boy and remained there for 15 hours (doing who knows what) while leaving her children unattended in the auto.

Having been left in the overheated auto, the children died.

Today stories like this are commonplace.  Between this story and the pathetic behavior the former F.B.I. Director and a host of others (particularly in the Obama administration) and among Democrats in the U.S. Congress and the media – it ought to be obvious that we are a nation in moral crisis.

Likewise, it ought to be obvious that those who voted for Mr. Trump are making a moral statement about the dire condition of this nation and that they are ridiculed and condemned by public figures, Hollywood celebrities and a sundry airheads and ideologues in the media and the press.

Yet, what is our focus?  Foolishness.  Bathroom privileges, hunting for Russians in the electoral process, expansion of the debt ceiling on the way to eventual bankruptcy, the celebration of deviant behavior, etc.

In the face of this there is nary an intelligent thought given to the place of morality in public life and the history of our country.  And, de Tocqueville was correct: we trade our faith and its tenets for the opportunity to live as we wish. Hello, child sacrifice that we call “choice” and codify as “the law of the land.” Shameful.

One wonders were are the men and women in public life with the intellect, analytical skill, wisdom, courage and humanity to recount the truth that without faith, without a prominent and protected place for faith in culture – moral decline and eventual destruction is a certainty?

Our education system (especially the once “elite” colleges, law and graduate schools) produces ignorance and ideologues – those without wisdom, moral strength or worth.

Liberal Christopher Lasch was once asked about the decline in civility, personal industry and self-restraint in America and he explained it quite easily when he said it was the result of the decay of religion in our nation.  Yes, he saw the hazard in exiling God and faith from the center of culture, law and governing.

In a short time in America, our liberal elites and the unchurched mass have undone hundreds of years of wisdom through the pursuit of unbridled freedom to do as they wish … and children ages one and two and the unborn suffer unto death.

Wonderful.  Just wonderful.

Shalom.

We had best pray that those who are lost, might come to their senses and to faith, and for two little children who are now dead.

“How full the days are, full of slow and quiet … Only here do I feel that my life is authentically human.

Thomas Merton

Merton’s words in a journal entry of November 1964 when he moved into his hermitage – a place to dwell alone surrounded by nature.

In my solitude on the ridge I know what he means.  Never have I felt closer to reality, to God, to the ground of being … or more at peace.

I am away from disorder, chaos … and the flood of bad behavior, routine deceptions and the idiotic chatter – its self-destruction.

I think of ISIS.  North Korea.  The American Left.  The media, the press.  Iran. Russia’s global antics and Europe’s passivity and foolishness.

When good falls victim to evil has not the ground under you shifted?  Is it not wise to seek Eden once again?

In Eden there are no pagans, no herds of selfish people making unwise and suicidal demands.

Merton and the Ridge.

In a room where people unanimously maintain a conspiracy of silence, one word of truth sounds like a pistol shot.

Czeslaw Milosz

+ + +

Czeslaw Milosz’s observations of life in totalitarian societies are spot on.

Yesterday’s testimony by former F.B.I. Director James Comey suggests we are closer to totalitarian society than we have ever been.

How can I say this?

Well, we had an F.B.I. Director who admits to leaking self-serving personal views of a privileged conversation with the President of the United States to the press through an Ivy League law professor at that!  As they say in my hometown of Boston: there is no honor among thieves, they’re just as dishonorable as the rest of us.

But the leaking was not the worst of it.  Mr. Comey admitted that he conformed willingly to the benign characterization Attorney General Loretta Lynch (another career government lawyer) imposed on him regarding the Hillary Clinton email/computer server/national security breaches when her friend Ms. Clinton was under criminal investigation at the F.B.I.

So our F.B.I. Director “took a dive” upon Democrat command but was, as he testified, afraid to meet with President Trump privately or to inform the President that he was uncomfortable with discussing any ongoing F.B.I. matters … and he was unwilling to tell the public at-large that Mr. Trump was not under investigation!

While there is more that could be said, suffice it to say that we saw the presence of corruption at top levels of the federal government … and at the very top levels of the legal profession.  This is very alarming.

In addition, now that we know President Trump was not the subject of any examination of the alleged Russian hacking attempts during the last electoral cycle and we also know that Democrats in the House and Senate knew that the President was NEVER a subject of an investigation YET THEY CONTINUED PROMOTING THE NARRATIVE THAT HE WAS, implying that he was in cahoots with Vladimir Putin and that Mr. Trump “stole” the election from Hillary Clinton with the benefit of Russian hacking and support.

If, as Milosz says, truth is a pistol shot … Mr. Comey and friends, and the House and Senate Democrats never fired a shot.  I guess truth is not “their thing” – slander, lying, character assassination to overturn an election result and secure political power apparently is.

And let us not forget the media and the press – biased as they are – full of “unnamed sources” and untruths.  No Milsoz gunshots there.

The conduct of the lawyers involved, the Justice Department, F.B.I., Democrats in the Congress, of the press, reporters and media commentators was disgraceful … and very harmful to this nation.

Let’s me plain: totalitarian societies rest on lies – big lies, little lies, daily lies, foundational lies and the silence that surrounds them.

The Left and the liberals in this nation have increasingly succumbed to untruths since the explosive late 1960’s.  This is very alarming.

Mr. Comey and company provide a troubling indication of decline, loss of virtue and of liberty.

No wonder common Americans rejected Ms. Clinton and the Democrats, and the “established” Republican politicians in favor of an inexperienced political novice now under constant attack.

Shalom.

Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go forth from your country … To the land that I will show you; and I will make of you a great nation … And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”

Gen 12: 1, 2, 3

+ + +

I sit in the morning fog in God’s green land.  Behind the mist are the pastures and the hills and mountains that I am sure to see when the veil is lifted and the sky is opened. I listen to De Profundis and Palestrina’s Gloria from Missa Papae Marcelli.

The news of the world is troubling.  In this land we wake to stories of overdoses, and of the murder of two young Muslim teenage boys on the eve of their high school graduation, both honor students on their way to college, and of conflicts and hostilities in Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Africa.  In our legislature the Party out of power acts like spoiled children, turns to obstruction while problems pile up and division disheartens.  Small groups act like angry pagans demanding this or that.  Racism surfaces among those once its victim.  The morning fog cannot hide the shame of this.

It had been four centuries without a prophet until Jesus emerged.  Four centuries.  Our Jewish brothers and sisters wondered why God was silent.  Then we received The Word, Immanuel – “God with us.”

We have been given the opportunity to become the children of God, to become the great nation that Abraham was called to bring forth.

Children of God and children of Abraham, but how do we act today?  We act as if there was no Abraham, no Jesus and there is no God.

Today we seek to create good through human acts but in place of good is conflict, discontent, selfishness, hatred.  The flesh and the will of man cannot triumph … it is God who perfects man, not man who prefects man.  Like Abraham we must be His vehicle, His instrument.

Like you I see the conflict, the needless hurt, the arrogance of man and woman, the reliance on self as if we are God.  We have credited ourselves with wisdom and power we do not have.

The good and wise man is humble, speaks softly – sees others as his family.

Are you the good and wise man?  Am I?

Shalom.

Not that one … (was) … evil.  But that millions had not the courage to be good.

John Fowles, in The Magus

+ + +

Seventy-three years ago today, America’s young men landed on the beaches of Normandy, France, knowing full well two things: (1) they risked their lives, (2) their country and the world needed them to defeat Germany and bring peace to Europe.

On this anniversary of the Normandy invasion a 25-year-old masculine-looking young woman, a twit, a Leftie – a Bernie Sanders supporter and Trumphater, has been arrested by the F.B.I. and is reported to have admitted to them that she took classified documents from the National Security Agency and sent them to a discredited Leftist organization whose mission it has been to interfere with America’s national security efforts.

Dandy.  In the 73 years since one of our greatest hours, we have produced gender-confused, ignorant, self-centered children whose Leftist ideology and personal fetishes seem to justify an arrogance that jeopardizes the lives of 300 million Americans, this country and Western Civilization.  In this we are way beyond pride – we are into real hate-filled pathology .. and this young woman is only one of many.

How did we get here?

Well it is probably hard to say definitively but one critical factor is that the Democrat Party has moved far to the Left and this has resulted in ideology supplanting pragmatism and patriotism.

The root of that Leftist ideology is, of course, Marxism which sees perpetual conflict between groups and fosters and sustains hostility which breaks down nation, national identity and community and furthers totalitarianism.  (It is any wonder that the Left has no regard for national borders?)

The Democrat Party of 2017 is focused on one thing: power.  They seek it through the growth and control of an ever-expanding federal government, the implementation of laws, regulations, programs and policies that seek conception-to-grave domination of all aspects of human existence.

Make no mistake, Ms. Self-Righteous Leaker is a product of this ideology which is, by the way, the preoccupation of American education – pre-school through college.

Yes, the Democrat Left indoctrinates.  Education produces sycophants, followers. The media provides daily instruction.  The herd follows lemming-like.  Betrayal results.

If you doubt the seriousness of this – just look at the Congressional Democrats, and Leftist press and media, college professors and “special pleaders” who viciously attack the Presidency – and in so doing undermine the legitimacy of the Office.

Look at how they obstruct legislative business in the Congress (thank you, Charles Schumer, disciple of Harry Reid).  With them, do nothing matches know-nothing.  Their mantra? Better selfishness than service!

Look at the political use of government agencies and a judiciary of ideologues.

Look at how lies dominate Benghazi and other sad failures.  Look at their last presidential candidate and her inability to admit her own failure.  Look at prominent Democrats embracing “resistance” to President Trump and national government.

By the way, make no mistake opposition to President Trump is opposition to all who voted for him.  Know this with absolute certainty: the Democrats don’t just believe those who disagree with them are wrong, no – they think those who disagree with them are deplorables – irredeemable.

From D-Day to Leak Day.  Some fall from grace.

Shalom.

Comey Testimony – If there is one thing you need to know about government it is this: only in government and education can you rise so easily above your level of competence and eventually command a country’s attention.  This is just more proof that government is best when it is small and education is badly overrated.

… in every society where the distinction of ranks has once been completely established, there have been always two different … systems of morality current at the same time; … one may be called the strict … the other the liberal, or … the loose system.  The former admired and revered by the common people, the latter … by … people of fashion.  (Emphasis added.)

Adam Smith, in The Wealth of Nations

+ + +

This is Smith writing in 1776.  His book had a huge impact.  Its date coincided with the founding of the United States.

What Smith said then is as useful now as it has been over the last 241 years. Smith knew people.  He knew power, and he knew politics.

What he said then is visible to us today.

We have groomed a collection of elites.  These are the privileged people – the super-rich and the very affluent.  We see them in national politics, among ex-Presidents, on the bench, in the media, in entertainment, among those newly wealthy in the computer and internet industry, within the highly-educated class and in the tenured positions at once prestigious colleges.

These are people who live well above the income level of the common person – their morals are not the morals of common people.  Regrettably their privileged lives convince them that they know better than the commoners and that this licenses them to enforce their morals (such as they are) on the rest of us … along with their public policies.

Ah, but their interests are not our interests.  They do not suffer when factory jobs disappear and when small towns no longer present a place to work and raise a family free of addictions, dependency and hopelessness.

This privileged class manifests less need for faith than the commoner.  Hence, their morals are unlike the commoner.  Surely not better, but rather uniquely destructive, divisive and unhealthy.

As Adams says so well, the morals of the privileged are ruinous …  and because they are wealthy, the elites can sustain years of disorder far longer than the commoner.

That said, when a nation loses its identity to illegal invaders, when abortion is a form of “birth control,” and the spread of terrorism takes the life of innocents, of children and unarmed men and women – the time for the loose morals and destructive policies and preferences of elites comes to an end.  THIS IS BRIXET AND THE HILLARY CLINTON AND DEMOCRATIC DEFEAT AT THE POLLS.  This is how one explains that the Democrats captured only 64 of the over 3000 counties in the U.S. in the last presidential election.

The heinous photo of a minor female “entertainer” holding the severed head of President Trump tells you three important things: one, the morals of the privileged are not the morals of the common person; two, the curve is bending back on the Liberals (the privileged class in both political parties) and their attitudes and disposition; and three, the relentless attacks on the President are the elites clutching at control, attempting to retain power at all costs … power over the common person.

Ah, but the times may well be changing.

Shalom.
