This is the day of Lord hath made, let us rejoice and be glad.

There have ever been and will ever be men who … will seek to exempt … parts of their faith from (authority) … to keep their minds floating between liberty and obedience.

Alexander de Tocqueville, in Democracy in America (Volume II)

+ + +

In Texas a 19-year-old women with two adorable little girls –  ages one and two – and no husband drove to a house with a 16-year-old boy and remained there for 15 hours (doing who knows what) while leaving her children unattended in the auto.

Having been left in the overheated auto, the children died.

Today stories like this are commonplace.  Between this story and the pathetic behavior the former F.B.I. Director and a host of others (particularly in the Obama administration) and among Democrats in the U.S. Congress and the media – it ought to be obvious that we are a nation in moral crisis.

Likewise, it ought to be obvious that those who voted for Mr. Trump are making a moral statement about the dire condition of this nation and that they are ridiculed and condemned by public figures, Hollywood celebrities and a sundry airheads and ideologues in the media and the press.

Yet, what is our focus?  Foolishness.  Bathroom privileges, hunting for Russians in the electoral process, expansion of the debt ceiling on the way to eventual bankruptcy, the celebration of deviant behavior, etc.

In the face of this there is nary an intelligent thought given to the place of morality in public life and the history of our country.  And, de Tocqueville was correct: we trade our faith and its tenets for the opportunity to live as we wish. Hello, child sacrifice that we call “choice” and codify as “the law of the land.” Shameful.

One wonders were are the men and women in public life with the intellect, analytical skill, wisdom, courage and humanity to recount the truth that without faith, without a prominent and protected place for faith in culture – moral decline and eventual destruction is a certainty?

Our education system (especially the once “elite” colleges, law and graduate schools) produces ignorance and ideologues – those without wisdom, moral strength or worth.

Liberal Christopher Lasch was once asked about the decline in civility, personal industry and self-restraint in America and he explained it quite easily when he said it was the result of the decay of religion in our nation.  Yes, he saw the hazard in exiling God and faith from the center of culture, law and governing.

In a short time in America, our liberal elites and the unchurched mass have undone hundreds of years of wisdom through the pursuit of unbridled freedom to do as they wish … and children ages one and two and the unborn suffer unto death.

Wonderful.  Just wonderful.

Shalom.

We had best pray that those who are lost, might come to their senses and to faith, and for two little children who are now dead.

Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go forth from your country … To the land that I will show you; and I will make of you a great nation … And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”

Gen 12: 1, 2, 3

I sit in the morning fog in God’s green land.  Behind the mist are the pastures and the hills and mountains that I am sure to see when the veil is lifted and the sky is opened. I listen to De Profundis and Palestrina’s Gloria from Missa Papae Marcelli.

The news of the world is troubling.  In this land we wake to stories of overdoses, and of the murder of two young Muslim teenage boys on the eve of their high school graduation, both honor students on their way to college, and of conflicts and hostilities in Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Africa.  In our legislature the Party out of power acts like spoiled children, turns to obstruction while problems pile up and division disheartens.  Small groups act like angry pagans demanding this or that.  Racism surfaces among those once its victim.  The morning fog cannot hide the shame of this.

It had been four centuries without a prophet until Jesus emerged.  Four centuries.  Our Jewish brothers and sisters wondered why God was silent.  Then we received The Word, Immanuel – “God with us.”

We have been given the opportunity to become the children of God, to become the great nation that Abraham was called to bring forth.

Children of God and children of Abraham, but how do we act today?  We act as if there was no Abraham, no Jesus and there is no God.

Today we seek to create good through human acts but in place of good is conflict, discontent, selfishness, hatred.  The flesh and the will of man cannot triumph … it is God who perfects man, not man who prefects man.  Like Abraham we must be His vehicle, His instrument.

Like you I see the conflict, the needless hurt, the arrogance of man and woman, the reliance on self as if we are God.  We have credited ourselves with wisdom and power we do not have.

The good and wise man is humble, speaks softly – sees others as his family.

Are you the good and wise man?  Am I?

Shalom.

Not that one … (was) … evil.  But that millions had not the courage to be good.

Seventy-three years ago today, America’s young men landed on the beaches of Normandy, France, knowing full well two things: (1) they risked their lives, (2) their country and the world needed them to defeat Germany and bring peace to Europe.

On this anniversary of the Normandy invasion a 25-year-old masculine-looking young woman, a twit, a Leftie – a Bernie Sanders supporter and Trumphater, has been arrested by the F.B.I. and is reported to have admitted to them that she took classified documents from the National Security Agency and sent them to a discredited Leftist organization whose mission it has been to interfere with America’s national security efforts.

Dandy.  In the 73 years since one of our greatest hours, we have produced gender-confused, ignorant, self-centered children whose Leftist ideology and personal fetishes seem to justify an arrogance that jeopardizes the lives of 300 million Americans, this country and Western Civilization.  In this we are way beyond pride – we are into real hate-filled pathology .. and this young woman is only one of many.

How did we get here?

Well it is probably hard to say definitively but one critical factor is that the Democrat Party has moved far to the Left and this has resulted in ideology supplanting pragmatism and patriotism.

The root of that Leftist ideology is, of course, Marxism which sees perpetual conflict between groups and fosters and sustains hostility which breaks down nation, national identity and community and furthers totalitarianism.  (It is any wonder that the Left has no regard for national borders?)

The Democrat Party of 2017 is focused on one thing: power.  They seek it through the growth and control of an ever-expanding federal government, the implementation of laws, regulations, programs and policies that seek conception-to-grave domination of all aspects of human existence.

Make no mistake, Ms. Self-Righteous Leaker is a product of this ideology which is, by the way, the preoccupation of American education – pre-school through college.

Yes, the Democrat Left indoctrinates.  Education produces sycophants, followers. The media provides daily instruction.  The herd follows lemming-like.  Betrayal results.

If you doubt the seriousness of this – just look at the Congressional Democrats, and Leftist press and media, college professors and “special pleaders” who viciously attack the Presidency – and in so doing undermine the legitimacy of the Office.

Look at how they obstruct legislative business in the Congress (thank you, Charles Schumer, disciple of Harry Reid).  With them, do nothing matches know-nothing.  Their mantra? Better selfishness than service!

Look at the political use of government agencies and a judiciary of ideologues.

Look at how lies dominate Benghazi and other sad failures.  Look at their last presidential candidate and her inability to admit her own failure.  Look at prominent Democrats embracing “resistance” to President Trump and national government.

By the way, make no mistake opposition to President Trump is opposition to all who voted for him.  Know this with absolute certainty: the Democrats don’t just believe those who disagree with them are wrong, no – they think those who disagree with them are deplorables – irredeemable.

From D-Day to Leak Day.  Some fall from grace.

Shalom.

Comey Testimony – If there is one thing you need to know about government it is this: only in government and education can you rise so easily above your level of competence and eventually command a country’s attention.  This is just more proof that government is best when it is small and education is badly overrated.

Delight in smooth sounding platitudes, refusal to face unpleasant facts … the utter devotion of the Liberals to sentiment apart from reality … played a definite part in unleashing upon the world … horrors and miseries (World War II).

Winston S. Churchill, in The Gathering Storm

Wars have their prelude, their component miscues and misadventures, their self-delusions and grand deceits.

One thinks of this now as many troubling signs emerge.

Russia is in Syria propping up a brutal regime, Iran pursues both nuclear weapons and expansion while supporting insurgents in foreign lands, North Korea strives for a nuclear arsenal and European countries seed authority to stateless Brussels bureaucrats while terrorists roam their homeland largely unabated.

In the United States, we enlarge the national debt, fatten the dependent population and the expand the expectations of citizens for more and more national benefits.

Some European nations are beginning to resume required national military service, yet attention turns to “global warming” as if nothing is more important. Fantasies absorb us.

In our once mature and sane representative democracy, college students require pampering and “protection” from free speech while some assault civility and those with whom they disagree.  On campus, hate is protected by cowardly administrators.

In the public square God is unwelcome while obesity looms and one wonders where the next “Greatest Generation” has gone.

As Churchill rightly notices, the antics of the Liberals pave a nasty road to a tragic destination.

Hard to dispute this today.  Indeed, we have lost touch with truth, and consequently, with reality.  But neither truth nor reality have lost touch with us.

At the foundation of moral thinking lie beliefs in statements the truth of which no further reason can be given.

Alasdair MacIntyre, in After Virtue: A Study in Moral Theory

When immorality prevails, we have stopped believing … without belief, truth and reality are lost and the storm gathers.

Postscript – An “unfunny”* female “comic” thought it amusing to be photographed holding the “head” of President Donald Trump.  Darling …

It is, thank God, always the case that people “self-report” – tell you who they are. So with this woman we see the Left is quite comfortable with those who behead their enemies. Charming …

(* “unfunny” is a state of being whereby a person does not have a humorous impulse in their body … if you see these people coming, run quickly in the opposite direction … if you encountered them in a social setting, make yourself disappear as soon as possible)

… when we are most human … we have greatest access to the soul …

Thomas Moore, in Care of the Soul

+ + +

We’ve come to a point where we miss the significance of being a human being. We have substituted racial identity, sexual identity, political identity as our primary identity.  We are homosexual before we are a human being.  We are Black before we are a human being.  We are “Democrat” or “progressive,” or “socialist” before we are a human being.

Of course this is not all people, but this is surely enough people that we have accommodated these identities into the culture in a manner that has been disturbing and destructive.

We have given special position and concern to race, sexual conduct, political preference and in doing this we have lost the single thing we have in common on this planet – that we are human beings first and foremost.

We need not be individualized to the point that we are less human beings and more a far lesser and insignificant designation of our own choosing.  In this specification we have created division and discord and balkanized a culture – separated ourselves from one another and made us perpetually at odds with each other … and much weaker as a nation.

To show you how bizarre this has become: Bradley Manning – the undersized, immature, young Army clerk who gave away national security secrets that exposed each of us and this nation to our adversaries and was sentenced to a long prison sentence only to be pardoned by Mr. Obama – is soon to be released from military prison.  The young Mr. Manning (having secured a sex change operation at taxpayer expense) will not be returning to private life however but rather has decided to remain in the military for the benefits it provides. Real public servant is he.

So a sexually confused and disordered young man who committed espionage gets a sex change operation, a pardon from Mr. Obama (God knows why), and stays in the military – all at your expense even though his conduct made you and your family more vulnerable to nuclear attack and death.

Do you see how a disturbed man’s sexual “identity” (disordered as it is) trumped his obligations and identity as a human being?  Selfish and sick to the core.  Do you see how Mr. Manning’s sexual disorder impressed Mr. Obama as something of importance?  Very disturbing. Feminized Democrat governance as cheap daytime soap opera!

Anyone who does not think this nonsense puts us as grave danger is fooling himself or herself.  We are human beings with obligations to one another.  That missing – watch out below … all tumbles.  Do you think of a moment that his “soldier” will defend you or die for you???  Heck, his Commander-in-Chief didn’t see anything off-kilter in this sordid matter.  How’s that for insanity?

Apparently the circus is in town … I hope it’s a not permanent addition.

Shalom.

Man of the People – It is reported that Mr. Obama received $3 million dollars for a foreign speech last week.  I guess “the Man of the People” conceives he and the wife will have a hard time existing on a lifelong pension with paid protectors and others handsome allowances.  Just plain folks they are.  St. Barack of the Freebie and False Persona. What a country!  And people attack Trump!!!  Hey, Barack is now “Mr. Gravy Train.”

Posting for Thursday, April 13, will be later today.  Have had the pleasure of an unexpected visit.  A little time with an old friend.

… because it is my habit to think in terms of people first, and their function in life only secondly, I failed to measure accurately how much Hiss’s regard for me had been regard for me as a Communist organizer … Thus my personal feeling for Hiss got in the way of my sober judgment … I nursed the unlikely hope that my break (from the Communist spy network) might have shaken Alger Hiss.  Nothing could have been more unrealistic. (Emphasis added.)

Whittaker Chambers, in Witness

+ + +

To understand the cost imposed by those who elevate politics above all else you need only ponder the above words from Whittaker Chambers who, having broken from his role as a Communist spy, went to see his friend and Communist colleague, Alger Hiss, an official at the U.S. State Department and a man (like other high-ranking Soviet spies in the West) from established and elite family origins.

Surely the difference between ideologues and others is this: the ideologues drained themselves of all regard for person – either their own or another’s.

The Left ideologue shows no regard for those outside their circle of belief and a life entirely committed to their political disposition.  They are, shall we say – “without sentiment or feeling – less human – more callous.”

Case in point.  In Whittaker Chambers meeting with Hiss in the latter’s comfortable home, he sits down with Hiss and his wife for a near-Christmas dinner and in the course of the meal Chambers begins to explain his rationale for leaving the espionage ring.

He reminds Hiss of “the Soviet government’s deliberate murder by mass starvation of millions of peasants in the Ukraine and the Kuban,” the multiple acts of Soviet betrayal of others in Germany and Spain, “the gigantic ulcer of corruption and deceit” in Stalin’s regime and his “purging” and murder of “thousands” to secure his totalitarian grip on the Soviet state, its military and secret police.

That done, Chambers records his words had not “made the slightest impression on his host.”

If you wonder what danger is posed by ideologues it is simply this: they forfeit their humanity and any regard for faith (seen as their arch-enemy) in favor of politics, political power, and total control.  They are, like Hiss, Stalin and others, a far cry from those who place faith at the center of their life. They are wilfully depersonalized.

As to our plight in America, the West and Christendom today – the choice is clear: politics and power or faith lived in its primacy.  Think about it this Easter week.

Perhaps the Whittaker-Hiss encounter will come to mind when you engage the fanciful Leftist who begins to spout their utterly predictable dribble.

Shalom.

One of the twelve, named Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, “What are you willing to give me to betray Him to you?”

Mt 26:14,15

+ + +

Part of the Easter story is about betrayal.  Above we have Judas willing to betray Christ.

Coincidently, today we have many in the Democrat Party and in the media fixated, without any significant evidence, on whether or not candidate Donald Trump or his associates colluded with Vladimir Putin in the last presidential election.  Never mind that Democrat operative and Hillary Clinton campaign chief John Podesta has a private, sweetheart deal with two Russian oligarchs and that as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton approved Russian purchase of a large share of America’s uranium and received (from the purchasers) a very large financial donation to the Clinton Foundation, that – of course – has raised no private or public inquiries or objections.

Betrayal is a constant in international affairs.  Take, for example, this from Whittaker Chambers’ Witness, his extraordinary account of Soviet widespread infiltration into the pre and post-World War II federal government:

… the Communist Party could recruit its agents … by the scores within the Government … they were precisely among the most literate, intellectually eager and energetic … in the nation … (these men and women) were dedicated revolutionists whose primary allegiance was no longer to … country – nor those factors which give a country its binding force: tradition, family, community, soil, religious faith. (Emphasis added.)

Rather makes you wonder if those on the Left who find constant faults with so much in this nation and its history have any inkling of the division they create which favors our adversaries and weakens this Nation.

Think about the damage they have done to family, faith, marriage, race relations, our financial stability (as to the huge national debt accumulated in the Obama years), education, our political discourse, personal relations as to men and women, industry, law and order, etc.

Nary a thought as to how their deeds benefit our avowed adversaries.

Lest you discount betrayal, or think the Left is harmless – one of my Johns Hopkins professors is serving a life sentence in federal prison after spending 30 years spying for Fidel Castro.

Beware of the Judas Factor.

Egyptian Atrocity – ISIS attacked Christians in their church on Palm Sunday. Does anyone doubt that Christians and Western Civilization are active targets today?  Yes, you are a target of opportunity.  Pray for those who suffered great loss in Egypt … and get real.

Shalom.

… you wicked and lazy slave … Throw out the worthless slave into the outer darkness, in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth …”

Mt 25: 26, 30

+ + +

… “wicked,” “lazy,” “worthless” …

These are powerful words to use and to aim at another person.  However these are the words of condemnation that Jesus used in telling the story of the master who left for a journey and gave to each of his three servants money (talents) to hold in his absence.

As you may recall, these are the words the master aimed at one of his three servants when he returned and found that the servant never used the money positively, but rather buried it in the ground for fear of losing it.

Much to the master’s displeasure, he had not used what the master gave him.

This is a story about slothfulness – about not using what you have been given. It raises a serious question for us (individually) and for our culture today.  Indeed, it is a measure wisely applied to those who profess to lead us today.

What is slothfulness?  In scripture we see it is rebellion.  The slothful do not serve God in their life.  No, in not serving God they register no gratitude to God for what they have been given (a life in being, for one thing).  Nor do they show obedience to God.  They shun the works God has called them to in this life.  They “do their own thing.”

Sloth is also wastefulness.  These people (and there are many) never use their spiritual gifts to glorify God.  They waste their time, gifts, and life on things that do not further God’s intention.

The slothful are selfish. They serve, not others, but their own desires.  They are lazy, as well, – preferring things that are easy to things that are hard.  These are the people who avoid work, depend wholly on others, take the low road or sit and do nothing, or in working never fully commit themselves to excellence.  These are the people who, while doing little, believe that they know better than others.

In thinking about this parable, I could not help but think about the Democrat Party of the Left here in the United States.  They are chock full of people who never held a private job in their life.  I think of Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, Bill Clinton, and Senator Charles Schumer.

Schumer, a Harvard Law School grad, never practiced law nor held a job in private industry after his schooling.  Rather as a young man with the gift of a “good education” he entered politics and never left.  He is one of those people who think, without any instructive life experience in the rough and tumble of daily work, that he knows better (always) than anyone else.  These are the slothful people who are perpetually foolish, trivial, loud, self-serving, and wrong. The Democrat Party of the Left attracts these people.  And in building dependents and the Nanny State, they breed slothfulness.

Think about it.  Does in make any sense for you to depend on the judgement of those with no life experience to speak of?  Would it not be better to cast them out to a dark place much as the master in the parable did to the lazy and wicked servant full of inertia and fear?  Have people such as these not done enough damage?

Shalom.

… ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. (Emphasis added.)

… the way is narrow that leads to life …

Beware of false prophets … You will know them by their fruits … every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit.

… he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter (the Kingdom of Heaven).

Depart from me, you who practice lawlessness.

Mt 7: 7-8, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 21, 24

+ + +

You have been offered access to the path.  This nation once was filled with those who knew this and sought that path – took it.  They made this Nation great among all other nations.

But now we ask what has happened?  Why the destruction?  Why the harvest of bad fruit?  Do you see the false prophets who plant the bad trees and harvest the bad fruit?

Do you do the will of The Father?  Or are you the lawless ones who live in silence when you should speak Truth?

We stand at a turning point.  Faith or destruction?  Where are you?  Do you have the courage to stand in faith?  To stand with Christ?  To do the will of The Father?

Realize your silence can bring death to many.  Is this who you have become? Who you now are?  I pray not.

Shalom.

Surveillance – The pundits and “talking heads” tell us that there is a “paper trail” of judicial warrants and FISA Court orders that coincide with government surveillance of Mr. Trump and his Republican associates.  I suspect this grants to those who collected information on Mr. Trump and his associates far more respect for law and the 4th Amendment than ought to be properly ascribed to politically charged snoops.  As we like to say in my old neighborhood: there is no honor among thieves – they are just as dishonorable as the rest of us.

Further – it is now reported that the materials reviewed by the House Intelligence Committee Chairman show the names of four individuals on the Obama White House staff who reviewed the classified surveillance.  This matter is all going to get far worse for those people and the former Democrat administration.  Serious breaches of law and national security create a real mess.  Such is the “bad fruit” of political hackery, Leftist hatred, incompetence, partisanship, disdain for law, the Constitution, God and this Great Nation.  We now know all we need to know about the American Left … and their water carriers in the press and media.  At this point, the Left, the Democrats, the press and media kiddies seem best at discrediting themselves.

There was a time when people were not concerned about self.  It was a time of simply being.  (Emphasis added.)

Gerald May, M.D., in Simply Sane

+ + +

It is said by some that when Adam and Eve partake of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil that this is the moment when consciousness is born, when man and woman see themselves as “self” – as living in a state of being “separate” and “apart” from God and one another.

That said, Dr. May in his book Simply Sane examines the evolution of the human being once he and she discovers the self and other.

May sees this as a very significant turning point that posts a false state of being and creates very difficult tensions, and problems, for the human person.

In particular, May reminds us when we were less conscious of self we are more aware of being itself, and life and creation as we were but a part.  Says May, when we focus on self our awareness fades and thought clutters our mind.  This transition, I offer with May’s help, creates distance between one person and another, imposes particular burdens on a single person and makes intimate experience far more difficult for the distance consciousness of self fosters between one person and an other, or all others – and in relationship with the Divine. One might ask in this context, Can one know the “I Am” when one must be the I am?

Yes, in self comes estrangement.  In a way, consciousness of self makes another a potential threat, an enemy.  Perhaps this is why we seem to prefer that “God is dead” or forgotten in the present secular age.

I have come over the years to see the loss of intimacy as a major and very damaging issue in modern life.  My observation has me think about so many of the modern horrors and disordered behaviors and wonder if it is not the estrangement from our divine and whole being and the resultant loss of intimacy that gives rise to so many modern illnesses and murderous escapades.

I ask for instance: What explains the homicidal rage of ISIS?  What empowers the need for nation states, like Iran or North Korea, to fortify themselves against “others” as they do?  Why is a flawed ideology like Marxism so embraced by “educated” people who should know it’s ugly and brutal history?  Why is pornography so prevalent?  How can homosexuality can exist in a vowed religious community?  How can women justify the killing of an innocent, unborn child in the womb?  How can the Left justify their lying to secure political power at the expense of their dignity and honor?  How can once great nations, where freedom was secured and debate welcomed, become so divided, so at war with their citizens with whom they do not agree? How can obvious dangers be ignored and incidents be overlooked because they are at odds one’s distorted political view of what is “correct?”  How can people lie to themselves and live what is false and a lie itself?  Cover up and excuse horrible crimes?

Self.  Self more than other.  Thought replacing awareness.  The other as enemy. Estrangement. Loss of relationship.  Loss of intimacy. Distance from others. Distance from one significant other.  Sickness on display.  Sickness excused, justified.  Sickness.  Decay.  Decline.  Death.

Think about it.

Shalom.

Question: When can we prosecute Hillary for national security breaches, or at least get her psychiatric help?
