The Day Before Christmas, 2016

… it came to pass that night, that the word of the Lord came unto Nathan, saying, … tell my servant David … Shalt thou build me a house for me to dwell in?

2 Sam 7:4,5

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel … he hath visited and redeemed his people … hath raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of David;  As he spate by the mouth of his prophets … that we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us. (Emphasis added.)

Lk 1:68, 69, 70, 71

Yesterday, our U.N. Ambassador, on instructions from our lame-duck President Obama, allowed the passage of a United Nations resolution that undermined our support of our ally Israel and, doing so, emboldened our ally’s enemy and those who hate them.

News reports suggest that Mr. Obama’s action was the result of his personal dislike of the Israel Prime Minister and, according to the Wall Street Journal, his opposition to the Jewish state itself.

That said the two excerpts, one from the Old Testament and one from the New Testament, are from the readings from the Catholic Mass today – the day before Christmas.

For me, the two readings tell that (1) God desired a home for the Jewish people, (2) the Jewish people are our older brothers and sisters, (3) God intended that the Jewish people be protected from their enemies and those who hate them.

However, most important – it tells us that presidential or United Nations actions notwithstanding God has the first and last word.

In contrast, this action shows that some who might lead have little or no understanding of religion, its role in life, nation and the world and in this prove again that they do more harm than good no matter what they do.

God gets the final word.

Shalom.
