Fools dwelling in darkness, wise in their own conceit, and puffed up with vain knowledge, go round and round, staggering to and fro like men led by the blind.

Katha Upanishad, Adhyaya – 6th Century B.C.

Daily lesser beings under the authority of self-designation and ignorance attack religion, and Christianity in particular, in an effort to root it out of American society.

Fools dwelling in darkness, wise in their own conceit … a prescription for disaster and decline.  Such conceit.  Such ignorance.

Yet, more than their presence is the astonishing absence of a worthy, informed, aggressive defense – not from religious people, Believers, scholars, public officials, or those we elect to represent us.

No, just silence and meek, ineffective objection without much passion or instruction.

Who do you see among those who attack or those who might defend who appreciate the tangle of ideas drawn from ancient Greece and our Jewish ancestors upon which Christianity is constructed?  Who among these speaks of how Christianity dramatically shaped Western Civilization?

Who are these ignorant elites who would destroy civilization and your welfare? Destroy your soul and your salvation?  By what right do they act? Why do we listen?  Why do we not oppose?  Oppose more firmly and in large numbers?

Who among the critics knows of ancient Mycenae, the empire without a Temple, and its destruction?

How can the ignorant dismiss religion when it has been for centuries the source of one’s identity?

Why do we wish the ugliness and disorder of the ignorant and the elites who live so poorly?

Who among those who attack mentions the place of religion (especially Judaism and Christianity) in the advancement of human existence over the last 2000 years, and its contributions to art, music, literature, science, to psychology, social and emotional intelligence, to human development, civic government and commerce?

Absent religion, what will order daily life?  Sustain community?  By what allegory will we know the Good?  Virtue?  Love?  Depth of meaning?

How will we appreciate the essential role of local governance, and the role of the citizen in self-governance?  No one who attacks religion mentions ekklesia – its place in self-government.

No, in ignorance and conceit – they oust what they do not know.

Fools dwelling in darkness, wise in their own conceit …

Why are you silent and so easily led?

Shalom.
