God … plumbs the depths and penetrates the heart; their innermost being He understands … He makes known the past and the future; and reveals the deepest secrets … He is from all eternity the same, with nothing added, nothing taken away; no need of a counselor for Him.

Sir 42: 17, 18, 19, 21, 22

Imagine if our leaders believed these words from Sirach, or even knew where to find Sirach and what it is.  Things would be vastly different if that were the case.

We might muster some confidence and actually form a coalition to oppose ISIS and Iran, and even engage terrorists where they are.  We might comprehend that each individual has dignity and an obligation to be responsible, and act responsibly. In that change alone few would feel compelled to declare they are “a victim” and, miracles of all miracles, “selfies” would disappear.  No more, “me” – “hurrah, for me,” “oh, did I tell you about me?”

But alas, no belief – no confidence.  No belief – nothing to stand for.  No belief – no action, only words – meaningless words seen by former allies and present day adversaries as signs of weakness and a lack of resolve.

Without belief the world becomes a dangerous place and enemies draw closer, ready to do harm.  And we add to their aim by being self-destructive.

Without faith we become a nitwit culture.  When power and politics exiles faith, destruction hastens.

This need not be.

From faith, courage.

Time to think critically … thank you for sharing Spirlaw with others.  One hopes that it helps people think about where we are and what is at stake – the real threat we face inside and without.
